Fiction and Children

Fiction is important for children to develop their Reading skills and also their Imagination.

Reading improves their writting skills as by osmosis they pick up the use of language, grammar, what sounds right and looks right on the page.

Reading aloud gives them practice and you can hear how they are understanding the written word.

My kids have spurts of fiction reading as well as doing the required homework reading. I don't always get to listen to them but instead I get them to read the ingredients list of the recipe I'm working on or the instructions from a back of a packet. This puts language and comprehension into the real world instead of being "school work".

On the Bookshelf

My 11 year old is deeply into Paul Jennings and Margaret Clark at the moment. Anything uncollected, uncensored or things involving shorts are devoured.

My 9 year old is into anything from Goosebumps or Joke Books.

My 5 year old loves anything by Dr Seuss or anything with trucks in it.

I think my kids are the only ones in the known universe who hate Harry Potter. I however have enjoyed those books a great deal so if your kids like him, give the series a try.
